TOPIC: Onan 5500 genset and Power Control System

Onan 5500 genset and Power Control System 2 months 5 days ago #1

I think I've finally figured this out regarding Redwood's specification of an Onan 5500 LP genset instead of the 6500. There is no documentation in my manual regarding how the Power Control System works but with some experimentation and further research I'm not too worried about the 5500 genset and my two roof air units. The power control system (Precision Circuits) in my coach can shed three AC loads (Air1, Air2 and Water Heater). It detects the service amperage type (50, 30 or 20) and monitors total amperage being drawn. Relay modules cut power or prevent power to one or more of the three AC loads until amperage draw is low enough to allow the load to be re-introduced. I tested this by running my generator and running both AC units simultaneously. These were no issue with the genset bogging down or tripping it's own breaker because the PCS will not allow the two roof air units (and H2O heater) to come on at the same time if the amperage is too high. It will wait for the primary roof unit to come off peak start-up amps before the relays open and allow the secondary AC loads to come on. The Precision Circuits literature indicates that their system will allow the safe use of 2 roof air units on a 30 amp shore power circuit and it works the same way on genset power. It would be nice if Redwood would have supplied more information on this system and how it works.

Probably most at RW don't have a clue how it operates, they were probably just given instruction how to hook it up, but not how it actually operates.
Just like the Techs at the Rally, they didn't have a clue what the issue was with our Cable Bedroom Slide, but the Gents from Norco knew as soon as they heard it.

I completely concur with your assessment. Luckily it all seems to work and if something goes haywire in the future I can rely on Precisions Circuits documentation and support.

Maybe this is like buying a new house and come to find out your stove doesn't work. The builder won't fix your stove or know how it works......but the manufacturer will.......That's how it works....it's not hard
